Matamba Bush Campsite

Matamba offers a unique camping experience, Sue and Alan Jarman have built the campsite they always dreamt of finding during a lifetime of traveling in Africa.

" We hope you enjoy the quiet relaxed atmosphere of the campsite which is unfenced, allowing the game to wander through. Wake up and find a herd of Gemsbok or Eland grazing between your tent and the ablution block, or watch Impala while doing the washing up."
Situated within the Waterberg Biosphere and part of the Waterberg conservancy. Malaria free, with easy access from Johannesburg and Pretoria (only 2,5 hours drive) and just off the R33 between Vaalwater and Lephalale, Matamba is an ideal weekend getaway or stop over on the way to Botswana.


Camp site:

The campsite has three well spread out, ‘private’ sites:

  • Hornbill
  • Francolin and
  • Drongo (closest to the ablution block)

Each one with a fireplace (firewood is supplied) and a tap. All three sites share the ablutions and kitchenette and there is power at both facilities with provision for campers to plug an extension into if required.

Ablution block:

The family ablution block is built from natural materials incorporating surrounding rocks as the shower floor, netting windows offer lovely views on to the surrounding bush.


The kitchenette has two washing sinks, an info area and a table and chairs for those wishing to swop traveling experiences.

Both of these buildings have power and provision for extensions to be plugged in.

Matamba Activities:

The campsite is situated on a private 400ha game farm with very relaxed plains game and a network of about 30km of roads ideal for walking or mountain biking, There is no driving on the farm.

Walking and mountain biking : The farm is on a gentle south slope with magnificent views of the Welgevonden mountains, The terrain is generally sandy with a few interesting rocky out crops, as the game use the roads a lot “reading the spoor “ is fascinating especially as there are many creature of the night, Jackal, bat eared fox, porcupine, Brown hyena and aardvark to name a few, their footprints are frequently seen.

Birding at Matamba is superb, especially during the summer months. The garden around the main house is a birders paradise this can be opened to serious birders on request. From a pair of lizard buzzards resident at the hide, to Gymnogene, and the diminutive Coqui francolin, Matamba offers Bushveld birding at its best. There is a small hide overlooking a natural waterhole, which is about a 40 min walk from the campsite.

The game at Matamba is very relaxed and accustomed to people walking, cycling or going for a run, this makes game viewing extremely enjoyable, a totally different experience to being in a vehicle. The photographic opportunities are endless from the beautiful trees to walking with animals.
